Veteran's Memorial Monument A sleek, black granite monument
bearing an American Flag, military emblems and a bald eagle was unveiled in
front of the Putnam County Courthouse Sunday.
Standing eight-feet tall and weighing 5,000 pounds, the monument is a
dedication to all veterans who served in the United States Armed Forces
“with devotion, loyalty and determination to preserve freedom.”
During dedication services, World War II veteran Ed Showman, Ottawa, said he
prays the monument will be a beacon that reminds people of the sacrifices
veterans have made.
“Freedom is precious, it’s not free,” Showman said. “To honor those who
fought for our freedom has been the desire of most Putnam County residents.
This has been a long time coming.”
There is a veteran’s monument at the Putnam County fairgrounds, but Ottawa-Glandorf
Rotary Club decided to spearhead fundraising for the new monument after
local veterans said they wanted a memorial that was more visible.
Rotarian and veteran Tom Rosenbauer chaired the club’s service project. He
said it was gratifying to receive moral and financial support from the
county. Since last November, he met with veteran’s groups to select the
monument design and visited 113 civic clubs seeking donations. Rotary
received over $17,000 towards the $19,500 project. The Putnam County
commissioners will pay for the remaining fees. Delphos Monument Company
constructed the memorial.
O-G Rotary president Sue Hohenbrink said it was a united effort to complete
the project, but described Rosenbauer as “the life-blood and energy that
made the project happen” and presented him with a plaque in appreciation of
his efforts.
State Representative James Hoops asked people to say a prayer when they
touch the monument for those who fought and for those who lost their lives
in the battlefield.
“It’s because of them that we are able to do things like this today.
Remember them and their families and those who will be involved in wars in
the future,” Hoops said.
Unveiling the monument were World War II veterans Francis Kern and Ed
Showman II, Korean War veteran Tony Hohenbrink, Vietnam War veterans James
Maas and Ed Showman III and Persian Gulf War veteran Charlie Doepker. Also,
Glandorf student A.J. Lammers participated to represent Putnam County
elementary school students who donated to the project.
